So, even if you're on a budget, you can still have a wonderful affordable riad in Marrakech - and a truly magical experience.

Riad Porte Royal

Why we like it | We may be a bit biased (after all, this is where we stayed on our first visit) but Riad Porte Royale is a genuinely wonderful choice. It marries traditional features with modern design, has a great little plunge pool to cool off in and a large terrace to enjoy breakfast or catch a bit of sun. Additionally, the staff are wonderful and will genuinely go out of their way to help you out.

Employing only traditional building methods, materials and furnishings, he has created an authentic Moroccan Riad loved by locals and guests alike. The large bedrooms are particularly lovely, as are the little hideaway corners dotted throughout.

Riad Yasmine

Why we like it | For anyone with even a passing interest in instagram, Riad Yasmine needs no introduction. Given it's popularity, prices have gone up (and reservations can sometimes be a little tricky to come by) but double rooms can still be had for less than 100 Euro...you may just have to nudge an Instagram star out the way so you can sit by the pool ; )

Price | Doubles from €90 / £80 per night

Riad Quara

Why we like it | Whilst the bedrooms appear to be on the smaller side, the communal spaces more than make up for this. A large tranquil courtyard replete with fountain, high-vaulted ceilings and fresh flowers throughout. Dar Attajmil

Why we like it | Okay, so this definitely comes in at the top end of our cut-off for 'affordability', but it's just so damn lovely! Small and intimate with only four rooms based around a cosy courtyard decorated with berber rugs and solid furniture (unusual for Marrakech). Lovely rooms, various classes available on-site, as well as a hammam, and access to a neighbouring hotel's pool.

Riad Le J

Why we like it | 1930s Art Deco design fused perfectly with traditional Moroccan features. It's stunning - but this is hardly surprising when you learn that Riad Le J is owned by two Italian designers. With only four guest rooms it provides a wonderful informal experience with a touch of luxury.

Azzouna 13

Why we like it | Besides the fact that this riad is quite frankly stunning (with incredible design features and artwork), its major selling factor seems to be its staff who will go out of their way to help make your stay the very best possible - it's quite impressive they don't charge more!
